St Michael’s Manor is the perfect romantic wedding venue located just outside St Alban’s, this exclusive wedding venue was the perfect setting for Ruth and John’s magical Christmas Wedding.
Why get married in December? Well for Ruth and John this was the perfect opportunity to celebrate Christmas with loved ones and at the same time hold their wedding as currently the reside in Vancouver although Ruth grew up in Hertfordshire.
Planning an overseas wedding can be tricky but Ruth and John had this covered, bracing technology and holding Skype calls with suppliers and although they may have missed out personally on the food tasting I know Ruth’s parents certainly enjoyed themselves.
I was introduced to Ruth and John by their good friends Rosie and Mark who’s wedding I had the great pleasure of photographing in Devon in July. Ruth was one of Rosie’s bridesmaids and it was lovely to see Rosie and Mark again too. I am always honored when my couples recommend me to their friends in Rosie and Marks case even more so as it was before I had even photographed their wedding day.
Although it was December you could be forgiven for thinking this was a spring or autumn day as the weather was very kind to us and although Ruth and John had a winter themed wedding, it was positively warm.
Ruth and John’s church in Harpenden was by far the best decorated church I have even seen at Christmas two tall beautifully decorated Christmas trees were proudly stood at each side of the alter, this made the perfect location for the larger groups as although the weather was warm it was pretty windy.
The day was perfect full of love and laughter.. Ruth has kindly shared details of the wedding professionals who helped create this beautiful day.

Why did you chose Julia to be your wedding photographer?
We chose Julia as our photographer on recommendation from a very close friend who got married earlier in 2017. It was a very good recommendation! When I met Julia as bridesmaid at Rosie’s wedding, I was so impressed with how organised she is, how she managed to coordinate all of the guests for photos in an authoritative but really friendly way, how she helped out throughout the day from getting ready in the morning to spotting the best light for photos through the evening, and she blended in as one of the guests. We were very pleased to have Julia as our photographer and the photos are incredible!
Best memory of your wedding day:
Ruth: we really enjoyed having the chance to spend the day with so many close friends and family. Living in Vancouver we don’t have many opportunities to spend much time with friends and family and it was fantastic to see everyone!
John: Turning and seeing my beautiful wife in her wedding dress walking down the aisle.
Any advice to future couples planning a wedding away from where they live:
So much can be done via email or phone, so it was actually surprisingly easy to organise the wedding from the other side of the world. We were already familiar with some of the suppliers we wanted to use and were lucky to have family based closed to the wedding venue to help out with some things that needed to be done in person. The most important thing to do in person we found was choosing the wedding venue (and we would definitely recommend St Michael’s Manor). We found it very helpful to start planning early and get things booked. It always takes more time over email, especially when you need to wait until the next day to get a response. We tended to use suppliers that accepted online payments, used skype and could do contracts electronically. It also helps to choose suppliers who are familiar with the venue. We relied on online reviews for picking many of the suppliers, so other peoples opinions really made a difference for us. For any couples living abroad, you may need to get a special marriage license so leave enough time to do this in person before the big day.
Anything you would change: The day was perfect, we couldn’t have asked for anything better. It just went by far too quickly!
